One of the most bizarre weather patterns known has been photographed at Saturn, where astronomers have spotted a huge, six-sided feature circling the north pole.

Rather than the normally sinuous cloud structures seen on all planets that have atmospheres, this thing is a hexagon.

The honeycomb-like feature has been seen before. NASA's Voyager 1 and 2 spacecraft imaged it more than two decades ago. Now, having spotted it with the Cassini spacecraft, scientists conclude it is a long-lasting oddity.

"This is a very strange feature, lying in a precise geometric fashion with six nearly equally straight sides," said Kevin Baines, atmospheric expert and member of Cassini's visual and infrared mapping spectrometer team at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, Calif. "We've never seen anything like this on any other planet. Indeed, Saturn's thick atmosphere, where circularly-shaped waves and convective cells dominate, is perhaps the last place you'd expect to see such a six-sided geometric figure, yet there it is."

The hexagon is nearly 15,000 miles (25,000 kilometers) across. Nearly four Earths could fit inside it. The thermal imagery shows the hexagon extends about 60 miles (100 kilometers) down into the clouds.

At Saturn's south pole, Cassini recently spotted a freaky human eye-like feature that resembles a hurricane.

"It's amazing to see such striking differences on opposite ends of Saturn's poles," said Bob Brown, team leader of the Cassini visual and infrared mapping spectrometer at the University of Arizona. "At the south pole we have what appears to be a hurricane with a giant eye, and at the north pole of Saturn we have this geometric feature, which is completely different."

The hexagon appears to have remained fixed with Saturn's rotation rate and axis since first glimpsed by Voyager 26 years ago. The actual rotation rate of Saturn is still uncertain, which means nobody knows exactly how long the planet's day is.

"Once we understand its dynamical nature, this long-lived, deep-seated polar hexagon may give us a clue to the true rotation rate of the deep atmosphere and perhaps the interior," Baines said.

And now you know how they transport from planet to another.

WoW. I never would have thought I would see something like this. I wonder if the shear size and conditions of the planet allow for geometric shapes to be formed in the weather on the planet. I am sure there are other theories. I would lovee to know how this came to be.

this site always keeps me informed of stuff i never even knew about...but this is most definitely a precise pattern

Incredible info. It's amazing to see.

i'm still wondering what it means though

The fact that you ask that question means your subsconcious mind remembers something about this or the shape or it's connection to the planet. It's a whole lot deeper then you may realize but let's just say those patters are not by accident.

wow i never seen anything like that before in my life i wonder what that is

wow thats really good to know that math is power of the ratio if indeed we were granted life should'nt we be humble of our blessings and applaude life ?..

i just followed the voyager 1 & 2 missions they are still going strong reaching the end of our galaxy its showing that we are incased in a bubble of protection from our sun that is humbleing to me not all things are bad that humans do its important to explore in this realm there is othere life out there ...

Wow so the Aquarian age is here the truth shall come out. All that is Hidden must be revealed. The Hexagon 6 Saturn 6th planet from the Sun, Merkaba, the star of David. This should show a clear connection as to what is going on on Earth. How we so fear the six when we are made of the trinity and the six and lets not forget the four. I cant really put much is words here and my apologies.

Strong energy Karma.

What to make of this?

To call this a 'hexagon with straight sides' is a slight exaggeration... it more resembles the sixth harmonic in a circular perimeter ... and indeed it is a significant interesting phenomenon that will tell us more about what is happening in and below the clouds once we have a theory to explain its existence and stability ... there are many forms of standing waves in fluids, signs of order emerge from apparent chaos quite naturally ,as indeed the circular patterns of cloud ... there is no basis to imagine life is responsible for this shape any more than the shape of harmonics that create the ethereal sensation of the quality of tone in a vibrating string (which can equally be isolated from each other and be stable } ...
