Quincy Jones speaks candidly about Michael Jackson Q&A

The hit-making producer behind the King of Pop's rise discusses Jackson's life, death, and love of chemical peels.

Q: How have you been holding up since Michael Jackson's death?
A: Oh, man. It's surrealistic. I went to Shanghai for the movie festival over there—I took Halle Berry—and then went back to Luxembourg, and in three days I lost Ed McMahon, Farrah Fawcett, and Michael. And Michael's thing is still surrealistic to me. I can't process it, man. I don't know how to process it. It's just unbelievable—him leaving before me. I can't believe it.

Q: How did you learn that he had died?
A: Well, everybody in the world called me. I got 500 e-mails. I've never seen anything like it in my life. At first they said they'd taken him to the hospital, then they said he'd had a stroke or a heart attack—it just kept going back and forth and we didn't know what was really happening. And at first I thought he was just kind of freaked out by the coming concerts, because I was in London when they announced the 50 concerts and they sold out in four hours. . . We'd see each other all the time, and I just can't believe he's not here.

Q: Have you been crying?
A: Oh, man, it's more than that. It's way more than that. It hurts my soul, man. It's just a lump down there.

Q: You were there to witness the strange evolution in Michael's appearance. Did you ever step in and saying anything about it?
A: Oh, we talked about it all the time. But he'd come up with, "Man, I promise you I have this disease," and so forth, and "I have a blister on my lungs," and all that kind of b.s. It's hard, because Michael's a Virgo, man—he's very set in his ways. You can't talk him out of it. Chemical peels and all that stuff.
Q: Did you believe him about the disease?
A: I don't believe in any of that bullshit, no. No. Never. I've been around junkies and stuff all my life. I've heard every excuse. It's like smokers—"I only smoke when I drink" and all that stuff. But it's bullshit. You're justifying something that's destructive to your existence. It's crazy. I mean, I came up with Ray Charles, man. You know, nobody gonna pull no wool over my eyes. He did heroin 20 years! Come on. And black coffee and gin for 40 years. But when he called me to come over to see him when he was in the hospital on his way out, man, he had emphysema, hepatitis C, cirrhosis of the liver, and five malignant tumors. Please, man! I've been around this all my life. So it's hard for somebody to pull the wool over my eyes. But when somebody's hell-bent on it, you can't stop 'em.

Q: But it must've been so disturbing to see Michael's face turn into what it turned into.
A: It's ridiculous, man! Chemical peels and all of it. And I don't understand it. But he obviously didn't want to be black.

Q: Is that what it was?
A: Well, what do you think? You see his kids?

Q: Did you ever discuss it? Did you ever ask, "Michael, don't you want to be a black man?"
A: No, no, no, please. That's not the way you do it.

Q: But he was beautiful before?
A: Man, he was the most gorgeous guy.

Q: But he seemed to have some deep-seated issue with how he looked?
A: Well, that comes about a certain way. I'm not sure how it happens. I'm just a musician and a record producer. I'm not a psychiatrist. I don't understand all that stuff. We all got problems. But there's a great book out called Too Soon Old, Too Late Smart. Did you see that? That book says the statute of limitations has expired on all childhood traumas. Get your stuff together and get on with your life, man. Stop whinin' about what's wrong, because everybody's had a rough time, in one way or another.

Q: I've heard you say that you wanted Michael to sing "She's Out of My Life," the great pop ballad from Off the Wall, in part because you felt like he had to deal with reality.
A: I just wanted to hear him deal with a romantic relationship with a human being rather than a rat. I'm saying that facetiously, but it's true. I saw him at the Oscars very emotional about "Ben." I wanted to hear him get in touch with a real human relationship. "She's Out of My Life" was written by Tommy Bahler from a very bad ending to a marriage. So it was very real. I was saving it for Sinatra. But I gave it to Michael. And Michael cried during every take, and I left the tears in.

Q: It's interesting you mention this, because I was just watching a clip on YouTube where you're sitting on a couch with Michael and he's petting a snake the whole time.
A: Oh, I remember that. Yeah, that was Muscles.

Q: Muscles?
A: Muscles. That's a big boa constrictor he had. Muscles used to wrap around my leg in a record session and crawl across the console. I was never comfortable with that. It was a choice between that and Bubbles—you know, the chimp.

Q: Did you ever meet Bubbles?
A: Are you kidding me? He bit a hole in my daughter's hand! Rashida's hand. Rashida Jones—did you see I Love You, Man? That's my daughter. She was a little girl. And Bubbles bit her hand. Michael used to bring Muscles and Bubbles by the house all the time, you know.

Q: What did you think of that? Wasn't that a little weird?
A: I don't know, man. Everybody does his own thing. I've met every freak in the business. Everybody has their idiosyncrasies. I try not to judge it, you know. I know all women are junkies for little dogs and bags and purses. Ha ha ha ha!

Q: At root, what do you think killed Michael Jackson?
A: I don't know, man. I'm a musician. I'm not a psychiatrist. I would think that the pressure of the concerts and the debt and everything else . . . look, I've been in the hands of Nobel doctors for the last five years, in Stockholm, at the Karolinska hospital, which you can't even pay to get in. I've learned so much about the human mind and the body, and the doctors talk all the time about how you become your thoughts. It's true. With one thought it starts, you know, and if you sit there and just stay hung up on one negative thought, you will become that thought. I know that Lisa Marie Presley said that she always thought he was going to die like Elvis. You sit and think about that stuff, it'll happen to you. If you start thinking about darkness instead of light, or fear instead of love, you'll get in trouble. I really believe that.

Q: With so many people asking you about Michael Jackson, is it hard to find the private space in which to mourn his death?
A: Yes, it is. It's surrealistic. I don't know how to process it at all. Because everybody's reacting to it, and making up their own answers.

Q: You've said that you don't attend funerals anymore because you've lost so many friends. Do you plan to attend Michael Jackson's funeral?
A: No, not at all, not at all. Because it's going to be, like, 9 million people there, and it's not what I want to see.

Q: You're not going to be there?
A: No. I can't be there, anyway. I'm going to Wales the day after tomorrow, I go to Montreux, I go to Marbella, I go to the south of France. My condolences and love I've already sent to the family. But being there with 10 million people is not my idea of a tribute to somebody you were so close to—who's got a part of your soul. Our souls were joined, you know. And a piece of it goes with him.

Michael Jackson The ANGRY BLACK MAN!

@IBMAdam The bottom line is this, you weren't there and either was anybody else on this site. So you're presenting us with what media is projecting to us as facts. Michael was a genius when it came to handling and manipulating the press. Don't be so quick to judge or discredit somebody Else's opinion.

For all who are interested my point was not crediting the New York times it is the information provide by the Medical Doctor which all are welcome to accept or not . To say Michael was not telling the truth about his medical condition was way outline by Mr. Jones who is a genius when it comes to music and production.

Michael Jackson two years after he was diagnosed with vitiligo universalis, pictured in the early stages of the disease.

Public figures with vitiligo
Michael Jackson two years after he was diagnosed with vitiligo universalis, pictured in the early stages of the disease.

* Michael Jackson was diagnosed in 1986 with vitiligo and lupus; the latter was potentially lethal but was in remission in Jackson's case.[14] In a 90-minute interview with Oprah Winfrey in February 1993, Jackson dismissed suggestions that he bleached his skin, admitting for the first time that he had the illness. The admission went on to promote awareness of vitiligo, a relatively unknown condition before then.
* Graham Norton has white patches in his hair as a result of vitiligo.[19]
* Lee Thomas, a news anchor and entertainment reporter for WJBK (Fox) Detroit.
* Krizz Kaliko, singer/rapper of the Strange Music record label. He has even named his debut album after the condition, Vitiligo.
* Doc Hammer, co-creator of the cartoon The Venture Bros., has vitiligo of the scalp, which causes his hair to grow in two different colors.[23]
* Thomas Lennon of Reno 911! fame.
* Eduardo Panlilio, Governor of the province of Pampanga in the Philippines.
* Mikel Jollett, lead singer of the band The Airborne Toxic Event.

For those who are honesty interested in the skin condition Michael had do some research and do not rely on innuendo or the opinions of anyone. It is about science, and facts - that's all.

I do not post this to get into any personal debates - I try to give facts and information that can lead one to explore for truth. What hurt me was to read on a Black website a personal statement by a Black icon like Mr. Jones saying what he said about Michael s condition which some Black people who are not well read may buy into and support arguments that he was trying to turn himself white.

One does not have to defend one's opinion. However anyone who passes off opinion or innuendo as if it is fact should bring credible evidence and scientific evidence to support their position when their opinion is called into question. You know - opinions are like a@@ holes and everybody has one. Perception is perception and depends on whom is perceiving. It is very much like opinion - everybody has one.

For all who claim to know Mr. Jones email him and ask him about Beat it - he was the producer and very close to Michael at that time. Ask him if he was producing a secret perverted video.

A little knowledge is a dangerous thing just as dangerous as innuendo which is not based on knowledge. Peace

@IBM Adam I'm not going to get in to a debate with you about what the truth is and what is non truth. I'm quite surprised at you for coming at me in the manner that you have it just gave me some deeper insight in to the person that you portray yourself to be verses what you really are. First and foremost you will be swiftly reminded of whose house you are in. You will not disrespect me on my own blog, I suggest when addressing me you try another approach brother. I am entitled to my opinion just like you are entitled to yours. I'm just merely reminding people that we have look beyond the iconic status and remind ourselves that he was a human being and he made some mistakes and bad judgment calls it is what it is. In no way did I say that it discredits his music or who he was as an entertainer go back and read my post again.

Sometimes the truth hurts and I see it has hurt you deeply for one reason or another. You took it personal to the point to where one would ask you what was your relationship either to him or the family? Why would you care one way or another about somebody Else's opinions on a blog??? This is my blog if you don't like what I have to say, you can bounce. It's not going to make me or break me one way or the other. I don't hold on to other peoples mess it will kill you, and you shouldn't either.

When you create a blog you post an opinion, I don't feel I have to defend where I stand to somebody who is obviously hiding behind a computer. See the difference between you and I, is you can see who I am and I don't mind being held accountable to my words. From what I see in your long written dissertation you speak on emotion with out any facts to back up what you say with the exception of his body of work which is quite commonly known to the masses.

Please...school me on something I didn't know that we all don't know. I have had the pleasure of meeting Quincy Jones and he knows that I am a straight shooter when it comes to perception. Your not in the game and based on your naive comments I would even go further to say that you have not had the opportunity to work in some of the same circles I have worked in. If you have there is no way that you would be making these naive comments out of your mouth. Brother whether you want to believe it or not there is a heavy price to pay when getting in to the game.

All the rhetoric in the world is not going to convince me what I can obviously see in plain site. You don't have to dig the information is hidden in plain site. If you look at the video and you listen to the lyrics that song does not make any sense. I see you have lost your critical eye or never had one to begin with, don't be upset prove me wrong. Other wise take all that whining and ranting and raving somewhere else because trust me I'm not the one for that.

And one more thing you are crediting the New York times man GTFOOH. Sooner or later you will come to realize that entertainment is one big song and dance meant to distract the people from things that are going on behind the scenes. As a media head I can tell you first hand that your brain has already been programmed and they did a hell of a job didn't they? What you choose to believe is on you, but you have not been on this site long enough to earn your stripes to come at me the way that you attempted to do.
Ibn Adam Comment by Ibn Adam on July 4, 2009 at 1:43pm
Quincy spoke very negatively about Michael's skin condition and also danced around the Black man issue - anyway Mr. Jones should becareful what he says in interviews - he is a bit senile and his information is not gospel.

For those who claim wisdom and for musicians who speak as if they are Medical experts when it comes to Michael Jackson’s skin condition I submit the following. I am surprised that so many Black and White people bought into the rumor that Michael was trying to turn himself white or that he hated his Black skin. True he had cosmetic surgery on his nose and today hundreds and thousands are altering there noses, lips butts and having fat sucked out from all places. Jews hated their big noses and cut them. White women are now getting Angelina Black folks lips and buts! The world and people with mega bucks have definitely gone wild. People are dying getting lipo suction!

Anyway I was particularly disturbed by Mr. Quincy Jones idiotic remarks about MJ’s skin bleaching and his unequivocally stating in the interview posted on this site that he in so many words thought Michael saying he had a skin disease was bullshyt.

It is also disturbing that Black people buy into bullshyt rumors and lies about themselves and their stars and so eagerly post them on their websites and in their tabloids. We should all speak with evidence and not accept innuendo and rumors. For those who want more information on MJ’s sking disease - albino skin problem read the following. Black America MJ was not trying to turn himself white! Only haters believe this. Quincy loved white women, and so many Black and White are starting to date each other because Hollywood and TV shows it as being the thing to do now - and I am sure many have sincere reasons - as well as race issues!

New York Times
Doctor Says Michael Jackson Has a Skin Disease
By GINA KOLATA
Published: Saturday, February 13, 1993
Michael Jackson, who said in a television interview with Oprah Winfrey on Wednesday that his light skin was the result of a disorder, not intentional bleaching, is suffering from vitiligo, a rare disease that discolors the face and body, his dermatologist said yesterday.
Although Mr. Jackson did not disclose the name of the disorder in the interview, his dermatologist in Beverly Hills, Calif., confirmed that the pop singer suffered from the little understood disease that affects 1 to 2 percent of the world's population.
"Mr. Jackson has requested that I make this statement," The Associated Press quoted the dermatologist, Dr. Arnold Klein, as saying. "It is not contagious and is a result of the loss of pigment producing cells of the skin."
Dermatologists said vitiligo (pronounced vit-ill-EYE-go) can cause a person to lose pigment in patches or all over the body, making a black person's skin turn white, for example, or giving a white person patches of albino-like skin. Although there is no way to prevent or stop the progress of vitiligo, the disease can be treated by repigmenting the skin, which is often at least partly successful, or by killing all the skin's pigment cells, making the skin uniformly light. Origins of Disorder
The loss of pigmentation often begins in childhood, although it can occur at any age, and it usually proceeds slowly, with a few white spots becoming noticeable on the face, knuckles or knees. The spots are symmetrical -- whatever happens on one side of the body happens on the other. The disease can stop with just a few white spots, or the light areas can spread. In severe cases, all the pigment cells are lost. The depigmented areas often include white circles around the eyes and mouth.
The discoloration can cause severe distress. "It really is a terrible problem," said Dr. Barbara Gilchrest, who is chairwoman of the dermatology department at the Boston University School of Medicine. She said she felt bad for Mr. Jackson, if he has the disease, because he had to endure "a lot of snide remarks and innuendos about his getting whiter and whiter."
Allen Locklin, director of the National Vitiligo Foundation in Tyler, Tex., said patients with the disease often become very self-conscious and depressed. Mr. Locklin, who is 68, said he saw the first vitiligo spots on his own hands and shins when he was a teen-ager but did not know what they were. The spots did not spread until he reached his 30's, when they rapidly grew and his face developed white patches. "I became a recluse," he said. "It was just devastating." Ancient Disease
Vitiligo is an ancient disease, Dr. Gilchrest said, adding that many of the lepers in the Bible probably actually had it.
But researchers still do not know its cause. One hypothesis is that the body's immune system turns on melanocytes, the skin's pigment cells, destroying them. But Dr. James J. Nordlund, chairman of the department of dermatology at the University of Cincinnati School of Medicine, said his data indicated that it is caused by a gene that disrupts the movement and storage of proteins within the pigment cells.
Even if the disease does have a hereditary component, it may appear in such mild form in some individuals that it goes unnoticed.
Repigmenting uses a drug that seems to make pigmented cells move from hair follicles into white areas of the skin. Patients take a drug, 8-methoxypsoralen, and then sit in special tanning booths where they are exposed to ultraviolet A radiation. The ultraviolet light activates the drug and, for reasons that are still a mystery, repigmentation usually begins.
Dr. Nordlund said that as many as 65 percent of patients can regain their pigment with the treatment.
But the treatment is slow, expensive, and has side effects. It takes a year or more of treatments twice a week, costing as much as $5,800 a year, said Amy Jones of the National Vitiligo Foundation. She said many insurance companies will not pay for treatment because they consider it cosmetic. About 30 percent of patients become nauseated and dizzy from the drug.
The American Skin Association says a new drug, 5-methoxypsoralen, which is sold in Europe and under review by the Food and Drug Administration, does not cause nausea and dizziness and can be used with natural sunlight.
An alternative to repigmenting the skin is denuding it of pigment altogether with drugs that kill pigment cells. Or, as Mr. Jackson said he does, patients can sometimes use makeup to give the illusion of an even skin tone.

One can find sexual innuendo in any song if that is what one is looking for. Many have written on the topic of innuendo and secret meanings – Hollywood makes millions on secret cults – imagined and real. What the human heart wants to feel; even what the ear wants to see or the brain wants to believe is an interesting subject. Some see little green men or alien ships - reality and perception are quite different.

MJ body of work stands for itself a huge artistically beautiful body of work - if anyone's harshest criticism is they find innuendo in a song so be it. Haters will dig when they want to hate. I am not saying anyone in particular is a hater. In terms of music with out right foul sexual - explicit sexual lyrics degrading young Black girls and women - well this website shines light and shares enough of that garbage and one does not have to dig for sexual innuendo or decipher with some ancient text what is being said.

You can let all the family listen to the Jackson 5 and MJ's music - and have no problem worrying about the moral character of listeners being negatively affected. Then again like they say beauty is in the eye of the beholder and I guess the same applies to the listeners of music and groups that search for innuendo and little green men and the secret messages in ancient texts – they usually hear or find the meanings they are searching for.

Innuendo - Is that the best one can come up with to show a negative on MJ's song. In fact the innuendo relating to masturbation was first raised years ago by a white group of haters on MJ and I guess a few Black's wannabe arm chair journalist and psychologist picked up on it and repeated it over the years. One has to really dig deep for that dagger – People have found innuendo and secret meanings in the Beatles music – some even acted on their insane interpretations and killed – even played records backwards!

Isis I am really surprised that you would give credence to such bs innuendo about Beat It.

For the record and those who do not get sucked in by white media bs and innuendo: "Beat It" is a song by Michael Jackson. Written by Jackson and co-produced by Quincy Jones for the singer's sixth solo album, Thriller (1982). Jones had wanted an ambitious black rock 'n' roll song, however, Jackson had never previously shown an interest in the genre. Eddie Van Halen was drafted in to add a rock guitar solo, but initially thought the phone calls from Quincy Jones requesting that he participate were fake. The lyrics of "Beat It" are about defeat and courage, despite media sources jokingly stating that they are a reference to masturbation.

Peace Power & Truth is what we should be about – dealing in innuendo is beneath those who seek truth. Call Mr. Quincy Jones and tell him what you just wrote and what some idiots have said the video was all about. He would laugh at you and you and your website would lose all credibility in his eyes. But somehow I do not think you give a shyt - you swallowed the homosexual maturbation bs and punked yourself writing about and offering to share the bs!

@IBM adam I didn't see anything that quincy said as a negative. If anybody would know Michael Jackson it was Quincy Jones. I think he was being very real and think when it comes to Michael we need to have a real view and perspective. And as you so quickly pointed out he is human. Most of us never really looked at the human side. There is no doubt that he was the greatest that ever done it in music and entertainment. At the same token he no one will ever fall as hard as he did. Also one more thing I like to add. Michael Jackson's song Beat it is about homosexual masterbation I suggest you go back and rewatch the video with a critical eye and listen to his lyrics. Better yet if you would like to see the complete break down of that video pointing out those facts I would be more then happy to point this out to you.

The reality of his life is real and when you get in to that 20 million mark or higher you will pay a serious price whether we like it or want to admit or not.
